Tony Howarth, 56. Tony Howarth spent over 35 years in the banking and finance industry. Uniquely, he held executive positions in Government, Regional and Major Banks as well as in Building Societies and Stockbroking.  During his career he was involved in the full spectrum of the finance industry. He has had international experience in London, Hamburg and New York. He was Chairman of Alinta Limited for 8 years and lead the Board through the company’s privatisation and public float. He retired from the Board in July 2006. He was also the Chairman of Home Building Society up until its recent acquisition by Bank of Queensland at which time he joined the Bank of Queensland Limited Board.

Currently he is Chairman of Mermaid Marine Australia Limited and a non- executive director of AWB Limited, Bank of Queensland Limited and Wesfarmers Limited. He is involved with a number of business and community organisations as Chairman of St John of God Health Care Group, Chairman of the Committee for Perth, President of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and a Director of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia. He is also a director of the Rio-Tinto WA Future Fund and the Western Australian Community Foundation. Tony is on the University of Western Australia’s Senate, is Chairman on the University Club and Deputy Chair of the Business School.

Tony is also Past President and now Patron of Cottesloe Rugby Union Club and Chairs the “FORCE 15 Foundation” for the Western Force which amongst other things assists players with their “Life after Rugby” careers.

In June 2002 Tony was awarded an Officer of Australia (AO) for his “service to business and finance and to the community through a range of health, cultural, education and sporting groups”.

In March 2003 Tony was awarded an honorary “Doctorate in Laws” by the University of Western Australia. He is also an Adjunct Professor at UWA’s Business School.

In 2005 Tony was also awarded Citizen of the Year in Business in Western Australia.

Tony is married (Sally) with two children (Dane & Mark). He was born and educated in Bathurst and Sydney and has lived in Perth since 1991.

A founding partner of Roberts Day, Mike Day has led the Company’s design teams responsible for an array of urban renewal projects and new towns throughout  Australia, New Zealand, Dubai and Asia since the Firm’s inception in 1993.

Mike has been the principal designer on the Ellenbrook New Town for the past 15 years.

Frequent and extensive travel across Australia, North America and Europe enables Mike to research and document the most successful established urban settlements and new towns which inform his approach to design.

Mike is a Fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia and the Australian Institute of Company Directors; a Board member of the East Perth Redevelopment Authority, and has held the positions of Deputy Chair of the Subiaco Redevelopment Authority, Chair of the SRA Planning Committee and Chair of the Housing Industry of Australia     [HIA] WA – Planning, Environment and Development Committee.

" The Perth Foreshore Project : Realising social dividends "

Howard Raggatt is an architect with a reputation for innovation in design practice and theory. After graduation he became a founding member of the Half Time Club, giving the inaugural talk in 1979. In 1982 he was awarded the RAIA President’s Award to Young Architects. He has played a lead role in many of ARM’s design awards including the Victorian Architecture Medal for RMIT Storey Hall and also the Shrine of Remembrance.

His work has been widely published and exhibited and became an important example in Charles Jencks’ book, The Architecture of the Jumping Universe. His thesis for a critical Australian Architecture (Fin de Siecle? 1992) developed operations for the copy, translation and the blur, and included the CD Not Songs.

Howard’s most recent work includes the new National Museum of Australia in Canberra. This museum was opened in March 2001, and was awarded the international Blueprint Award, for Best New Public Building. 

Howard lead the design for the Yarra Arts Precinct development in Melbourne which includes a 1000-seat recital hall and the new 500 seat performing arts theatre, which will be the new home to the Melbourne Theatre Company. Currently, Howard is design director of the Perth Waterfront development, and the $350M multipurpose indoor stadium, Perth Arena.

Paul Murray was the longest serving newspaper editor in Australia when he resigned from The West Australian in 2000. In an era when editor’s careers are counted in months rather than years, Paul Murray outlasted many of the powerful people who tried to have him thrown out of office.

Paul was editor of The West Australian for ten years, and every existing circulation record on the newspaper’s books happened during his tenure. In 1998 he achieved a magical one million readers target for The West Australian’s Saturday edition, and pushed the circulation of the newspaper over 400,000 for the first time.

In a major career move Paul accepted an offer from Radio 6PR in 2000 to host the station’s all important morning current affairs program. In his six years as host of this program Paul was recognised as one of the leading current affairs broadcasters in Western Australia. In 2006 Paul resigned from 6PR to return to The West Australian as a regular columnist and specialist writer.

Paul’s extensive media career has given him an insider’s view of many of the events that have shaped contemporary Australia.

Wayne Stewart Martin was appointed to the Supreme Court of Western Australia on 1 May 2006.

He was appointed as a Judge of the Court, a Judge of the Court of Appeal and as the Chief Justice of Western Australia.
He was born on 28 December 1952 and attended North Perth Primary School and Christchurch Grammar School.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) in 1973 from the University of Western Australia and was an articled clerk with Lavan & Walsh, Perth.


He completed a Master of Laws from the University of London in 1975 and was admitted to practice in Western Australia in 1977.
After being a Senior Litigation Partner with Keall Brinsden, Perth, from 1984 - 88, he joined the Independent Bar in 1988 and was appointed a Queens Counsel 1993. From 2001 - 2003, he was Counsel assisting the HIH Royal Commission in Sydney.


He served as President WA Bar Association from 1996 - 1999, Chairman of Law Reform Commission of WA from 1996 - 2001, President of the Law Society in 2006 and Director, Law Council of Australia in 2006.

LandCorp is a government trading enterprise and operates as the Western Australian Government’s specialist property development agency. It provides a commercially oriented vehicle for delivering the strategic land development goals of the State.

Ross leads a dedicated team of professional staff across fields as diverse as property, business administration and strategic marketing helping LandCorp operate with a triple bottom line approach.  More than 50 per cent of its more than 200 projects throughout the State are located outside the capital city of Perth.

Resources rich Western Australia covers an area of 1million square miles – one third of the continental land mass of the Australian continent.

Under Ross's leadership, LandCorp has focussed on sustainable development outcomes for the benefit of the Western Australian community.

LandCorp has sought to extend those outcomes to the built form through the application of design and building guidelines and through joint ventures with the private sector development and building industries.

Tony Morgan - Chief Executive Officer

Tony Morgan is Chief Executive Officer of the East Perth and Subiaco Redevelopment Authorities. In his role as CEO, Tony places a strong focus on achieving sustainable outcomes in urban planning and redevelopment.


Prior to joining the East Perth Redevelopment Authority (EPRA), Tony was Director of Urban Operations at LandCorp. During his career, he has overseen the highly successful Joondalup City and Bunbury Marlston Hill projects, and currently presides over the Claisebrook Cove, Subi Centro, New Northbridge, Riverside, East Perth Power Station, Perth Cultural Centre and 'The Link' projects.


Through his ethos of ‘making it happen’ Tony is committed to delivering the EPRA Board’s vision of ‘Vital Perth’ by redefining the city’s inner urban areas, attracting new investment, and making them places that people want to be part of.

Normalising a Boom : Reflecting on Social Impacts

Daniela was appointed as inaugural Professor in Stronger Communities at Curtin University of Technology and Director, Alcoa Research Centre for Stronger Communities in December 2003.

Daniela is one of Australia's leading social scientists working at the intersections of resiliency, human service practice and social cohesion focussing on families and communities in regional/rural Australia. She has published widely in Australia and internationally, and regularly presents her work at national and international conferences.

Daniela is frequently asked to advise Federal and State government agencies, drawing on her considerable policy experience developed in the Federal Government.

She has had visiting fellowships in Australian, Canadian and Czech Republic Universities. Her record of successfully completing high quality post graduate students on time can be seen from their own subsequent successful career development, including high publications records.

Daniela was invited to the Australia 2020 Summit and the National Rural Women's Summit, and is currently a member of the Federal Minister's Review of Drought in Australia social panel.

Ken Maher - Chairman of HASSELL Ltd

Ken Maher is a leading Sydney based architect and is executive Chairman of HASSELL Ltd, Australia's largest international multidisciplinary design practice involved in major urban projects throughout Australia and Asia.

Ken is active in practice and academia, being a Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Built Environment, chairing the Dean's Advisory Group, and a board member of the University of NSW Foundation. He was a founding Board member of the Green Building Council and a member of the Technical Steering Committee in developing Greenstar rating tools for the building industry.

He has been influential in setting environmental and urban design policies for the Royal Australian Institute of Architects as NSW President and a member of the National Executive, and Chair of the National Education Committee, and has initiated high level summits for reviewing city design and urban strategy issues.

Ken has been an advisor to government in design and the built environment, including Chairing Premiers Bob Carr's Urban Design Advisory Committee (and introducing innovative measures to improve high density housing design), participating in the Strategic Industry Leaders Group for the previous Federal Government's Built Environment Design Action Agenda (chairing the International Opportunities working group), and is currently  Chair of the City of Sydney's Design Advisory Panel and a member of the City's Public Art Advisory Committee. He was recently appointed as an international expert to advise the Executive Office of the Dubai Government to advice on strategies to transform Dubai to a more liveable and sustainable city.

Ken's recognition as a designer includes receiving two Sulman Medals and the Sir Zelman Cohen award for projects he has led within HASSELL. He is a Life Fellow of the RAIA, a Fellow of the API, and was recently made a Fellow of the Green Building council of Australia. Ken speaks frequently at conferences and public forums on design, sustainability and the future of cities throughout Australia and internationally.

 

Tom Baddeley - State Director of CEDA, Western Australia

Tom Baddeley runs CEDA's West Australian office. He joined the organization in January from RugbyWA, where he was Manager of Media and Communications for the Super 14 team, the Western Force.

Tom holds degrees in Arts (Politics) and Law from the Australian National University in Canberra, and a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice from the University of Technology, Sydney. He has worked as an Associate for a Justice of the Supreme Court in the Northern Territory and practiced as a solicitor with Malleson Stephen Jaques in their Sydney office.

He left the law in 1993 and joined The West Australian newspaper, where he was a business and property writer. In 1997, Tom moved into television, first with Channel Nine and then with the ABC, specializing in finance reporting. He later became presenter for the ABC’s Stateline and TV evening news bulletin in WA before joining RugbyWA in 2005 in the lead-up to the Western Force’s Super 14 debut.
